Move to Moscow

Red Fir Coffee House

There’s a new reason to head out in the direction of Potlatch; Red Fir Coffee House. A scenic 20+ minute drive from Moscow brings you to the charming town of Potlatch. A company town founded in 1905 by the Potlatch Lumber Company, logging still plays an important role in the town’s economy. Located on 6th St are two old buildings (over 100 years old) owned by Rachael Hemphill and her husband, Shan.  They purchased them over a year ago and moved in their business, Werkz, which manufactures holsters, to one of them. Their original thought had been to create an office for Shan in the other building.  That plan changed one night, however, when he told her, “you’ve always wanted a coffee shop, maybe you should make it there?” Rachael’s response was to jump in with both feet.

They began remodeling the space a year ago. Gorgeous blue wallpaper and a lusciously thick, gold framed chalkboard line the back wall behind the coffee maker.  With surrounding crisp white walls and high ceilings, the aesthetic is fresh and clean while still incredibly inviting!  Across the hallway is a welcoming fireplace room -- the exact room you’d want to be in on a blustery day.

But doing the remodel themselves meant a lot of hours and a lot of demo work.  The idea for the name was Shan’s.  Inspired by the original flooring in the building, which was fir, and Rachael’s red hair; Red Fir Coffee House was begun. Her mission and vision was to create a space where everybody felt the love of the Lord whether they were a Christian or not. She wants a coffee shop with great hospitality and lots of smiles.

Rachael originally thought of doing the baking herself, but instead of adding that on top of launching and running the Coffee House, they source them locally.

While she aims at creating a traditional vibe (so be sure to order an americano or cappuccino), Rachael’s favorite drink is not at all traditional! She came across it on Pinterest and it divides people sharply.  It’s called an Espresso Tonic which includes vanilla with ice, tonic water, and an espresso shot poured over the top. A fun drink they have been creating lately are Lavender Lattes.  Rachael recently had the pleasure of being part of a surprise party for the sheriff’s wife  where they served lavender lattes.

The excitement in the new coffee house is tangible. The Hemphills saw a need in the community for a coffee shop and are eager to fill it. Since they’ve been open, the shop has been filled with moms and kids. Business meetings have already taken place there.  And with wifi available, the location is excellent for studying or meeting to get work done.  She’d love for the coffee shop to encourage more local shopping. So stop on by for a cup of coffee and while you’re in Potlatch and take a stroll through some other local shops! (Forest Nursery and Fiddler’s Ridge are both out there as you start to plan your summer gardens and patios!)
