The Silos and Social

Let’s take a look at The Silos Coffee and Social. Moscow asked for another great venue for gathering, greeting and eating, and guess what? You’ve got it! The ground floor of Moscow’s iconic grain silo has been transformed into a unique business and social space. The logo says it all, “The Silos Coffee & Social” with the image of a French press beside a grain silo. First off, you have ample parking to pop in for a quick pick up and go, but frankly speaking once you pass through the front doors, you’ll want to slow down, and linger. Silos & Social offers coffee, tea, Italian sodas, LOTUS drinks, bakery goods, specialty sandwiches, specialty salads, and daily soup specials. Combined with comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, lots of outlets, a huge patio with fireplace, wonderful views, and artwork to boot, it’s an amazing place to stop in and enjoy. Co-owners Maya & Danielle greet you with a smile and their staff bends over backwards to ensure your visit exceeds expectations. Oh, and they have the best business hours in town by far. I’m an early riser and at last I can get a great coffee drink, sit down and gather my thoughts at a place with early hours! They open at 5 A.M. and keep their doors open until 10 P.M. Read that last sentence again. Are they Locally owned? Yes! Owned and operated by women? Yes! Pet friendly? Yes! Eco-friendly? Yes! Student friendly? Yes! In fact, on Monday Nov.14th, 2022, they did a $2 dollar pancake breakfast for all college students with ID between 6am and 12 noon! That is unheard of. Check out their website, thesiloscoffee.com, there’s a complete menu, photos of their food and drinks and their phone number to order take-out, (916) 796-3595. Find them on Facebook and Instagram-@silosandsocial, go to Yelp and see their reviews, so far 5 Stars, seeing is believing, eh?

Favorites: All coffee drinks feature Ruby roasters coffee beans. If you haven’t tried, try! I love me some Mocha, ask for a smidge more chocolate if you’re like me. Their Cold Brew is outstanding. If you like Matcha get a great one at their coffee bar!  I haven’t tried their Masala Chai but I’ll bet dollars to donuts it's as amazing as the rest. Gotta love a spot that offers 11 flavor pump options plus four more sugar free, amiright? Looking for alternative drinks? Don’t sleep those Italian sodas and make sure to add cream, yeah you read that right, add the cream! You’re very welcome. LOTUS energy drinks are featured too. I had a peach flavored 12 oz with my lunch sandwich and chips. That bev was not only refreshing, it invigorated me for my afternoon push just when I needed it most. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Their bakery offerings are diverse and pretty much all top notch. If you can’t decide between muffins, scones, or pastries, all of which rotate for a fresh look, try one or even two.  And by all means, get their signature Silos Rolls! These babies are fluffy wonders glazed with caramel, I mean, so darn good! Get them… please. Rumor has it their Avocado toast crushes the norm, microgreens and a bit of pickled red onion.  I’m an Egg sandwich guy and theirs is a go to. They also offer Egg bites, oatmeal two ways and Greek yogurt parfaits.  Sandwiches are a thing here and they are GOOD!  My top lunch choice for spicy lovers is the Chicken Chipotle featured sandwich of the week; rotisserie chicken, pepper jack cheese, chipotle spread, and romaine lettuce on a toasted ciabatta roll. This one deserves a permanent spot on their menu. Their two standards are the Pesto Chicken on a ciabatta roll with rotisserie chicken, Monterey Jack, pesto, tomatoes drizzled with balsamic glaze and the BLAT (BLT with tomato and avocado on tasty sourdough). If you’re into grilled cheese you’ll drool over another featured sando available; The Bomb Grilled Cheese, cheddar and pepper jack cheeses and tomatoes with pesto ranch on sourdough. If it’s available you are in for a treat!  BTW, suggest that it gets permanent status on the menu as well. For salad lovers they have three: the Silos Salad featuring peppery arugula topped with maple bacon, hard boiled eggs, avocado, chevre & lemon-olive oil dressing; Cobb loaded with ham, bacon, avocado, egg, cheddar and your dressing of choice, and lastly, a featured salad. As of this writing it was a Fall Chicken Salad replete with rotisserie yardbird, mixed greens, apples, cranberries and feta cheese with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

Are you into soup? I am too, especially in cooler weather, the Chicken Tortilla is a winner. Soups are featured so there’s always something new to look forward to.

Whether you’re like me, a local always looking for great coffee and food or simply passing through Moscow, stop by Silos & Social and experience something different; something delicious! Come on in and pick up a free logo sticker soon before they run out!

Until the next Kestrel Post, this is Kris Smith, ciao for now!
